Full Version: Help with cutting holes for -6 oil tank.

Help!

I'm in the middle of repairing the longitudinal rust on my 914-6 conversion and I'd like to cut all the required holes for installing a -6 oil tank. I have most of the left rear quarter-panel off and I'd like to cut the holes while I have easy access.

I can plainly see where most of the holes should go, but I don't know where to cut the unmarked hole.

I could also use some help cutting the required hole in the engine tray sheet metal.

Any help is appreciated.

Are you asked what tools to use? I have used NEW cheapy Harbor Freight hole saws for doors......you can get a whole set for 12.99. As to where to cut, the inside of the bay should have all the impressions pressed in by the factory.

It's a trial and fit job....it will be in and out of that fender MANY times. BTW, what are you using for oil lines and fittings? Factory lines? Build yer own?

The oil tank if factory has metric thread and either needs to be adpated to AN fittings or you have to use factory lines....

That is, unless you have an aftermarket tank with AN lines.... blink.gif

Not to toot my own horn but I do have a precise cutting template in my 914-6 conversion guide. It is pretty obvious where the holes need to be drilled (absolutely none in the engine shelf on the up to 72 cars) but it is the size that matters!

The problem is I don't have the tank yet (I'm waiting for a DWDesign Aluminum tank...sometime in mid-Feb).

I plan on running metric to AN adapters, rubber hose, and a Fluidyne oil cooler. I converted the car some time ago and was running a Peterson oil tank and ATL fuel cell with a built 2.7L.

However, I want to make it look more like a stock GT. I have the body down to a bare shell and most of the rear quarters are off (to do some rust repair). I'd post some pics, but I don't have a place on the web to store them.

I'm trying to get all the body mods done now while I have easy access.

The Harbor Freight idea is a good tip. I'll have to look at their hole saws on their website. I have some of the right sizes, but not the big one.

Cut the ones you can see, do the finish work later.....or just wait until the tank shows up.

BTW, I have some Metric to AN adapters....the bling bling, blue anodized ones and some other odds and ends that you will need.

Kudos to the Auto Atlanta templates, they were a perfect fit when I cut my conversion. Had the locations and sizes of the holes well laid out.

Only caveat, if you're using an aftermarket tank, you might be best served to wait till you get the actual tank. Use the old adage, measure twice, cut once!

JJ... if you can make the trip you can look at my DWD tank and take measurements.

I believe Dan Root sent me this a couple of years ago. Worked perfect.
I doctored it for clarity.

The image needs to be 8.5x11, then print.
Line up the tank mount hole with the raised filter console boss on the stock 914-4 inner fenderwell, mark for the new hole and cut.

Much better to have the part in hand and make the template from the part for an aftermarket tank.

If you are using Ben’s / 914-6werkshop tank, it’s identical to a factory tank for all the critical points.

I will be using Ben's tank and do have it in hand

So print this out, see how it lines up, and then off I go with a hole saw?

I suggest templating my tanks to make it even closer.. There are some slight variations

agree.gif I used the template for my DWD tank and it was a hair off, but still close enough.
