Full Version: Gas cap hose

Was going to post this in the prior thread but most of seems to have disappeared.
Anyway:
1. Got the old incorrect hose dyed and inserted through the grommet, so it looks ok. But…
2. Looking under the gas cap, the line is crimped, see pic, so no vapor flow (tried…).
Question: is this normal? Part of a recall notice done ages ago by dealer or by a mechanic somewhere along the time path? I’m sure I didn’t do it.

I wonder then if it’s crimped then should the hose be connected to the nipple on the expansion tank? Could it create a vacuum as the gas is used, leading to a very bad gas tank inversion? Maybe leave the hose off that nipple to prevent vacuum in the tank? confused24.gif

Probably just to keep a large amount of gas from entering the system if overfilled or when sloshed from spirited driving. confused24.gif

But if crimped closed it can’t serve any function. Weird…..

Is it an airtight crimp? Not airtight would allow some vapor to pass. Not seen this.

Yes; mine seems air tight. Blew into long end of the hose; it filled then blew back when released. Could see where it might be lightly crimped to keep out debris but not full crimped.
Still learning about the car even after 52 years….

Checked with fellow teener here. His is crimped too but has a bit of flow to it. Maybe my crimp just has 52 years of gunk in it. To the bat garage, Robin!!

Put a drop of penetrating oil on the crimp, a bit of brass wire brush the a tad of puncturing with a small vise grip followed by a short wire from the hose side of the nipple.
Now have just a bit of flow for any vapor equalization.

I happened to be in the garage working on my car so I snapped a couple pictures of that pipe in the filler neck. Mine looks unmolested and is kind of flattened down too. beerchug.gif

Checked mine (‘73 2.0) and it looks crimped as well. Did not do a blow test yet tho.

yeah mine's crimped.

its not there for fluid to pass through.
its for air mixed with vapors. fuel expands with heat.
and - as you also note its to provide pressure equalisation as the tank draws down,
air is drawn in via the charcoal can route, through the expansion tank and through that little crimped tube.

probably a good thing you cleaned it. sounded like it was clogged.
