The BFG T/A tires livery car team #86 and #87 924 GTR' s were quick at the 1982 LM24 . #87 won its class, while the faster* #86 lost a centerlock wheel on track (Manfred Schurti) when a corner worker assisted him with wheel installation >> LM rules black flagged the car and DQ'd it.
* The faster #86 GTR had the latest Weissach tweeks and held the Porsche Transaxle car record for fastest lap at Le Mans. Not an easy win for #87 either; Jim Busby said that 5th gear was intermittently not engaging...mostly ran in 4th gear. With some more LM24 luck, a Camaro dicing in the same class started lapping slower, and #87 car took the P1 in class. It's also the Porsche LM24 1982 Poster car. The Kügelfischer mfi was a high butterfly style with the injectors affixed into the velocity stacks, rather than into the intake plenum. The common air intake filter box was enlarged , and the hood scoop now moved directly over the airbox for cooler air. On some close-up pics (#86 on hood area) you can glimpse the sheet metal cover just over the old location of the scoop. As far as I know, the #87 car of Busby, Bundy and Van der Mere was not to these specs. The #86 had a several lap lead on #87, when the center lock wheel came off. All GTRs did run twin belt drive water pumps, as blown head gaskets occurred often with a single pump. The 4cyl Audi iron block/ aluminum head 2 valve engine was a workhorse !
