This is the front suspension from my 72 that I am putting in Howard. This one is straight, I do not have another. The adjuster cap on one side fell off as soon as I removed the adjuster bolt. The other side is holding it position like it's from Texas.
And the arm I could get off the torsion bar is stuck fast. I need to get the bars out without harming the splines or heating it up so much it takes the spring out of the bars.
I'm sure this is semi common so I'd sure appreciate hearing how you managed to get yours loose. So would Howard. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) Thanks

The back side has a plug of sorts that can be removed and later installed if I'm not mistaken, you can then use a punch and a hammer to hit it out of its home from the back side. Its probably slightly rusted into the splines, giving you a hard time removing it.

I got the adjuster cap off. But the bars are still not moving

When you say back side, that would be this adjuster cap. But I understand what you mean. I was hoping that I would not need to pull that cap out. I fear that will destroy it.

Gaaads. Well I’m shaking it boss, but that plug is not wanting to play fair. I concaved it with a ball peen which gave me gaps then tried to rotate the cap with a punch. No love. What am I missing?

There is one nagging question that came up as I was hammering on that plug. If this is what I need to do to get it out, how in heck do you get it back in?

Since you won't be reusing that plug, I would suggest inserting a screw into it and using that for leverage to pull the cap off. Or drill a hole in the plug and then use a screwdriver to pry it out. It's a $5 part.

You can tap a new one in place pretty easy. I used a small rubber mallet.

Well hahaha, I ended up grabbing my brass mallet and hitting it from the back side a couple wacks and that plug ended up somewhere in my backyard. Cleaned the splines with oil and a wire brush and removed the rust soup with a paper towel. I dipped that same end into a tube of grease and slid it back into the splines. Then it was just grab the brass drift and send the torsion bar back the way it came.
