Is this the correct assembly of the shift rod to bellcrank on a 914-6 with tail shift transaxle? Based on the parts catalog, I don’t see that I’m missing anything. It seems like there is an excessive amount of play to me. I do have the friction ring installed in the support bracket, but it's got some wiggle room too. Maybe this is the crux of the sloppy tail shift experience I've read about?

It is hard to find any photos of this without the protection cap installed.
