74 with a eg3.3. 914 transaxle being swapped for a 2005 Impreza 5 speed. And lastly the car has flow masters that will absolutely make your ears ring for days

So first off I need to get some front inner cv joints preferably OEM Subaru and I’m struggling. My plan is to then have Dutchman modify my stock 914 axle to a Subaru inner spline. Finding front, inner Subaru cv joints has been challenging. I see rock auto has complete axles but most are Chinese and the reviews are all over the place. Vibration seems to be a real problem. Subaru parts shops are telling me different things like new cv are no longer available, or they have a new updated unit, or there not sure. I get that fronts are different from rears. Anyone an expert on Subaru cv’s

Next is my dang exhaust. I’m serious you guys. The decibels are ludicrous and the drone unbearable with these dual flow masters. There would be no communication with anyone on a road trip let alone my brains spattered throughout the interior. Looking at some turbo style but ultimately want a nice tone, no drone and the ability to enjoy a fairly quiet drive with reasonable performance still at work. Any suggestions? At nearly 70 my needs have changed.

There are plenty of Subarus in the Junkyards. You can find a good used set of Subaru axels there. They are not that hard to remove. Bring the right size punch to knock out the roll pins and your good.

100K used Japanese joints in decent shape are FAR better than brand new Chinese...

Running true dual exhaust on most 4 cylinders sounds like ass.

I'd run 4 into 1 and a "turbo style" muffler. 2.5" final single tube should work fine.

FlowMasters are supposed to be noisy!

Which Subaru transmission are you using?

Not sure on the year break down but the older transmissions have a stub that sticks out of the transmission whereas on the newer ones the axle goes into the transmission.

Here is a link to some adapters that would let you use 930 / 108 mm CV joints at the transmission. You'd need custom axles so at that point you might as well as run 108 mm outer CV joints and 5-lug wheels.

https://subarugears.com/product/subaflange-...rsche-standard/

The same company also sells adapters to convert the transmission from the newer style axles to the older style. I am planning to go the above route just haven't ordered them yet.

If you are getting older style axles at the junk yard, I believe a 1/4" punch works.

Sorry, you did say 3.3 and I missed it.

Many 6 cylinders sound terrible 3 into 2. My Datsun Z car (my second sports car of which I traded a 70 914 for) had 3 into two.

I described the noise as "A pack of wounded Harleys" Horrible!

With 6 into 1 it sounded more like a Ferrari than anything else. Nirvana!

The audio sound has a bunch to do with firing order. Nice evenly spaced pulses sound better.

It wouldn't surprise me in the 911 has even firing pulses on its banks hence the sublime audio track.

The 911 sounds GREAT 3 into 2.

Some like the Nissan V6 in the 300zx and up sound horrible anyways, doesn't matter what you do to the exhaust.

Others (Alfa Busso V6) sound better than anything else.

I'm not so sure about your Subie...
