SO, I bought a $375 part from Canada. Seller shipped UPS and part arrived at border. I got and invoice from UPS for $109. IMPORT TARIFF $85,BROKER FEE $24 and IF I did not pay ASAP an additional $20 delay fee. So my bargain cost $485. No more parts from Canada for me. If it makes you feel any better, I paid $132 tariff on a lexan windscreen coming from England. Good times!

if its any comfort we suffer the same and have been for about 6 years now.
new fed govt won election in 2022 and went after the GST (goods and sales tax) on all import items. its 10%. there was chaos for about 6 months until the couriers streamlined things and instituted a collection process. the presidents tariffs in the USA are a sales tax by another name. think its the way your sales tax system works - its a state tax for you guys so if the feds want to have a tax they have to call it something else. hence tariff. down here the feds collect the GST and distribute it to the states. so they never needed to rename it. way of the world. not sure if you guys end up paying state sales tax when you import goods. don't think you do? so really its just a matter of the USA doing what every other country now does. all the govts world wide seem to be grasping for income wherever they can get it. It doesn't seem very unusual to have import fees. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/confused24.gif)
Same applies the other way around when Canadian import car parts from the US. - First: Duty fee if the part wasn't manufactured in the US: 6-8% - Second: Federal good and service tax is applied on the goods and the duty fees: 5% - Third: Provincial tax is applied on the goods and the duty fees -> Province based (Alberta 0% to Quebec 10%) - Fourth: Carrier will charge you brokage fees - Fifth: You will also pay federal and provincial tax on those brokage fees. Yep, it cost to import stuff! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wacko.gif) One way around it is hand carry your parts across the border and benefit of exemption which is $800 value if you stay 48h (both ways). Moreso, if you cross from Canada to US, that $800 is per persone per household in the vehicle. Go with your wife and bring back $1600 worth! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) |
