914’s have always had a 12v starter and entire electrical system is 12v (IMG:style_emoticons/default/shades.gif)

What exactly are yiuvtrying to compare? Early VWs and 356 had 6 volt systems.
Do you have a 914. All were 12 volt

I believe all type 4 applications (not just 914s) were 12v as well.

You mentioned a bushing, 914s starters don't use the shaft end bushing.

Are you working with a VW/bus/Vanagon trans?

Need a lot more information here.

If you’re asking about a VW beetle, the 6 volt versus the 12 volt starters had a different number of teeth on the gears. They also had different flywheels with different teeth patterns.

But, yes IIRC there is a conversion bushing you will need, in addition to a different starter, battery, flywheel, alternator/generator, wiper motors, etc.
