Hi, all.

I pulled my hand brake to park on a hill. When I pulled it up, the button, shaft, and spring shot out like a rocket. No more hand brake! Started looking closer at it and there doesn't seem to be an easy way to fix or replace it - the brake is riveted to the tub and the fatigued shaft just gave up the ghost.

What options do I have here?

It's a '74, if that matters.

Everything wrt the e-brake comes off with nuts and bolts. Figure out what part broke and replace it.

A single cable from the handle goes to an equalizer to 2 cables; one to each side. Might be time to inspect and replace any other components which look worn/broken.

Can't be sure from your description, but this might just be the parking brake button coming unscrewed. If the parking brake button comes unscrewed the rod and spring can come out of the handle. Didn't know that button had to be checked for tightness until that happened to me. Now every now and then I make sure it is still tight. If that's what happened the fix is easy. Put it back together and screw the button back on (unless the threads on the button have stripped). Diagrams are in the PET
