This is my setup, installed I think around 10 years ago.
This shows the Kenwood head unit and the two speakers on each side  I don't recall where I bought these, but they're much stronger speaker boxes that came with decent Blaupunkt coaxial 5 1/4" speakers installed.  |

The Kenwood is a four-channel head unit, I use these Boston Acoustics coaxial 5 1/4" speakers in the doors. They produce significantly more low-end response than the Blaupunkts do.
 The Kenwood head unit has a removeable face. I mostly use the BT connectivity with my phone.  |

The Kenwood has a remote microphone for phone calls, which mounts nicely above the ignition switch.
 Lastly, operating the head unit can be a pain in the 914, as it's closer to the passenger side, with lots of fiddly buttons. Luckily, it has a remote, which I have velcro'ed to my center drink holder.  Overall, it's a decent system. Despite being 10 years old, it still works for me and the sources I listen to. Sound quality is good, with enough volume and good frequency response to handle the noisy open/closed 914 passenger compartment. I'd be interested in seeing some newer systems people have installed. I’m running a 7” head unit in a custom console, which also houses a Pioneer powered subwoofer. I have aftermarket speaker boxes with 6.5” Focal mid bass drivers with tweeters on the windshield posts. Nothing crazy, but it sounds pretty good for what it is.
