Hi.. what does the brain trust think about gel batteries? Are they the cure for acid spill into hell hole? Are they dependable for the cost?

I put Interstate AGM Group 5 batteries in both of my 914s. Stock looking, they fit perfectly using the stock hold-down plate and were reasonably priced at Costco. Working perfectly at 3 and 4 years old.

I switched to an Optima battery a number of years ago. My 1st yellow top lasted 11yrs before I had to replace it. 2nd one lasted under 2. Now on my 3rd as I warrantied the 2nd one. I may look into Odyssey batteries or now Interstate which I didn't know made AGM flat plate batteries at a decent cost.

I had the red top Optima in my Jeep when I built it and it did fine until it fully discharged after sitting for several months unattended. After that it never worked again and it was less than a year old. That price on the Interstate is Excellent! Think I found my new battery.

I've been running an Optima red top for about 14 years at this point. Still works. When I have more than a few weeks of downtime, I hook it up to the Optima branded tender.

Both AGM and gel cells are good for the 914. Not sure if either is a complete fix for the battery acid problems, but they're definitely good to have!

I cannot find this battery when I search Costo. Actually, I can't find it anywhere when I search on Google, which is strange. Can you share the Costco link please @914werke ? |
