My cigarette lighter is not working (not sure why yet, but don't think I have blown fuse,) therefor I don't have power for my phone or dash cam.

I have not crawled under the dash yet to look for any broken wire connections.

Are there any tricks to removing it?

Yea, just crawl under the dash and shine a light. You will see how it comes apart.

I use a pick and a small screwdriver to pry off the retainer.

Don't be afraid to slightly bend a few of those fingers on one side. They bend back easily. Having said that I wouldn't bother reinstalling that lighter case as it is too large for modern day device charges to sit in snugly. I made that mistake. Unless you smoke you don't need a cigarette lighter. Just a charger. I used one that has 2 charging ports. IIRC, one is .5 amp and the other is 1.5 amp. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif)

I swiped out my lighter socket for a dual USB plus digital voltmeter. An easy and inexpensive mod.

I like the idea of replacing the lighter socket with a dedicated USB charger. Thought the lighter socket was powered even with key off (I'll have to check). Would mean you'd have a draw on the battery all the time.

Ditto, I did the same (but not with voltmeter).

If the cig lighter is powered direct, I'd expect that whatever you have plugged into it (e.g., phone) would not be connected all the time, and I suspect the LED (if the plug has one) would not be a significant battery draw.

The cig lighter in my '75 only receives power when the ignition is on.
No need to rewire anything if yours is functioning (sounds like the OP's isn't though) just . I use one of these:

I came here to look for a way to remove the socket and will try to pry the fingers back tomorrow. I'm putting an USB socket w/o the voltmeter as the socket doesn't work anymore. Wish me luck.
