I need to make a decision regarding a sticky throttle situation on my 1.7L car that's not actually hit the street in anything more than a quick test drive.
The pedal feels "catchy", thru the entire range but especially coming off idle. It gets smoother the more you work it, but reverts back to being sticky after a short rest. Pedal cluster has been rebuilt. - I removed the TB, cleaned it and oiled it with a thin oil at the bushing areas. It actually felt quite smooth when actuated by hand.. so I thought that would be the solution. When I re-installed it and attached the cable, the pedal action seemed a little better (just marginally). - Checking at the TB (with and without cable and spring attached) it seems to want to stay open apprx. 5-8% or so, after the pedal is released or TB is worked by hand.. That small amount that it stay's open is easily overcome. Also, it's possible to slightly raise the throttle pedal by hand when it's at rest, which translated to a slight decrease of idle speed. -The pedal moves pretty smoothly with the cable detached at the TB. So - I'm guessing this is a worn TB issue. Are these symptoms classic for a worn TB or not? My issue is: this being a 1.7 that I may soon upgrade to a 1.9 because I have the P/C kit already - or I may sell the engine (which seems to run well) because I also have a 2056 'GA' engine - I don't really want to invest in a TB rebuild atm. I thought I might try to source a good used one for the time being (but then one could think these are just fine until installed, right (IMG:style_emoticons/default/hissyfit.gif) ). I think the 1.8 TBs are a little bigger and would maybe be a better fit if taking this engine to 1911. I've heard of people stretching the plenum's to fit bigger TBs on 2.0L etc.. but has anyone done so on a 1.7? BTW, the 1.7L only has a single spring that attaches to the engine tin for it's return.. I like that the 1.8 TB has a secondary built-in spring as a safety. Anyone have a known good 1.7 (or 1.8) TB they might want to sell? Thoughts on the subject welcomed. |

I didn't see you say you had lubed/checked the cable yet. Chased a sticky TB on my 79 Super Beetle that turned out to be a bad cable. Somehow it got kinked and was hanging up. Just a thought....
Edit: NM. I see now that you did say it is hanging up when working it by hand with the cable disconnected |

Contact them. I think they have rebuilt units and you can send them your core. Short of something like that… I don’t know what you’re going to do. If you buy one on eBay or from a parts car, you’ll likely end up right back where you are.

The cable is new, & lubed upon install
I detect a little vertical shaft movement but otherwise none.. is the vertical movement a tell-tell, or normal? |
